Why Convict Yourself To Emotional Self-Imprisonment?

Just imagine being given a jail sentence merely because we could not handle our emotions. Think of the public outcry! But conjure with the idea of being given a thirty, forty, even a fifty or sixty year sentence! The level of public indignation about our human rights would surely dwarf any riots we have seen. Add a final insult and tag us 24 hours a day to remind us of our emotional disorders, and the fury would erupt. Yet this is exactly what many of us do to ourselves. We impose life sentences of emotional self-imprisonment and tag ourselves!

And the metaphor gets even more real and even more horrifying, the more one dwells on it.

Because of trauma, shock, hurt or abuse, we can and we do sentence ourselves more harshly still. We commit ourselves to solitary confinement, guarding our inner most emotional secrets with a level of zeal and shame with is extraordinary. This personal imposition can also originate from guilt, abandonment, rejection, or from humiliation, bullying or molestation.

Yet in our hearts we know that were there ever to be any appropriate system of emotional courts with judge and jury, none would convict us as severely as we have done to ourselves. None would find our case proved as warranting such a fierce punishment.

But just focus on this metaphor one more time- when we have the highest criminal prison population on record. And now ponder on the fact that a vast number of us - walking the streets apparently free, have nevertheless imprisoned ourselves in unresolved emotions!

And our level of commitment to the sentence can be astonishing. It can involve a vow of silence and secrecy to ourselves –something we determine to take our grave. This we can deem preferable to a mistaken belief that if we unburden ourselves we will be emotionally pilloried until our death by relatives and friends, and that should be avoided at all cost!

More weird, emotionally speaking, even when the underlying cause can have been in no way of our making or our fault, we still seek to deny that to ourselves and then compound the denial by buying deeper into the shame, humiliation and rejection as if somehow we deserved it!

That can set in train yet more entangled and constraining behavioural thinking. We can use this misconceived buy-in as a stick to beat ourselves harder than anyone else with the same knowledge ever would – or should. And why ever do we do this? Because we have let ourselves think it is our just desserts! The ‘tagging’ is provided by our self-talk which we encourage sub-consciously to reinforce our worst thoughts about ourselves

And paradoxically we can find we draw strength from our apparent courage and fortitude to shoulder it on our own, when few around us would see any sense or justification in that.

I think it is fair to say that Time once was when maybe this emotional flagellation was deemed to be part of being human and living a human life. Not enough was known then about psychology and the impact of our behavioural thinking.

But no more! No longer is that true. Irrefutable psychological and behavioural truths pile up one on top of another - from one research project after another – each revealing to us ever more about our human nature. More welcome still they reveal to us how we can neutralise and re-frame our reactions to horrific indignities we have endured.

The benefits of encouraging ourselves to end our self-imprisonment, to give ourselves emotional parole and to re-configure the emotional memories and patterns are now well documented.

Why? If for no other reason, because we know now it is no longer necessary for we humans to endure it. And nor is it justified any longer to inflict our emotional shortcomings on others, young or old, for them to replicate what we have done and to resort to emotional self-imprisonment for themselves.

So we should at least talk about these things, share them and unashamedly seek help to understand them. We should cherish the reality that none of us are perfect, that we are unique and most particularly we are blessed with the ability to cure ourselves emotionally.

And if that is not enough, then quite simply accept that we do not deserve this toxic form of imprisonment when help is now at hand. There are number of good proprietary self-discovery books and programmes available.
The Hoffman Process is one programme worth checking out. A great self-help book by Tim Laurence called " You Can Change Your Life" could help you. A self-discovery novel I have written covers this issue and could help you take the step to bring the imprisonment of feelings to an end. I do hope so.

A Success or Failure Trait Identified in Nursery School Children.

More and more research reveals just how important those first five to seven years of a child’s life are in terms of their future. Now more details have emerged from a study of 1000 nursery school children in the poorest neighbourhoods of Montreal lead by Dr Linda Pagani from the University of Montreal. The results suggest that likely success either as high fliers or failure as drop outs in their lives can be forecast early in life.  

The children monitored were between five and twelve. Various attributes and failings were monitored, including how well they worked on their own or in groups, their self-control and self-confidence, and their ability to follow instructions. Dr Pagani maintains that for a child the classroom is their workplace and it mirrors their likely productive, task oriented behaviour in the future.

It was found that those with good levels of attention in class were more likely to develop the work orientated behaviour needed to succeed in the future.

More worryingly, those with attention problems at a young age were far more likely to become school drop-outs and struggle with employment and substance abuse.

Whether a child displayed one or other type of the traits, the research confirmed those traits continued as the child progressed through school and it is suggested he or she will carry them into adult life to their benefit or detriment, as the case may be.

For me, this raises some significant aspects for parents and grand-parents. I still have not found any convincing proof that says how a child is at five, eight or twelve is how they were when they were born. Instead there is damning evidence that where a child is mixed up or is not able to concentrate, work with other pupils or follow instructions, it stems from short-comings in their home life – not from school.

Patterns like these so often are adopted well before school years.

Does this mean that the parents involved are intent on committing their child to failure and ruin? In most cases , no way! Could it mean then, that if both are working or leading busy lives in ways that offer little structure or direction for a child to emulate, then it’s a problem for the child in the making? I fear it does.

In the fast moving and sophisticated world in which we live, with its many temptations and diversions, it is clear beyond doubt, that children cannot simply bring themselves up effectively in their early years. Nor can they make their own mature judgements. Instead they follow examples, they reflect, they copy. Worse in ignorance, they can form patterns of behaviour which help them short-term but can be lethal if adopted as a permanent behaviour.

For parents these days, it is an unrelenting challenge. Getting the balance right can seem impossible. Yet the payoff for children to follow good example becomes ever more clear, whether that example comes from parents, older siblings or grand-parents.

And there is no doubt that we reap what we sew.

New Year's Resolutions, An Interesting Article

The latest Saga Magazine has hit on some great points and is worth reading on Page 85, 86 & 87. 
A little presumptuously, I will add my own pennyworth.

Merely making a New Year’s Resolution, just for the sake of it, is not enough. Extraordinarly perhaps, a good number of people seem to make an annual resolution just to make some resolutions. The way we work in mind body and spirit cannot cope with the vagueness of that! And indulging in such a practice is not good for the soul anyhow. 

Whatever our resolution is, for it to work effectively and be achieved we need to really, really want that. A Resolution constituting a mere wish is not enough!

And making too many resolutions at once doesn’t work either, certainly until we get skilled at it.

We need to see one resolution in our minds – done, executed, completed – in vivid and emotional form. It should be like a picture we have willingly emblazoned on our psyche, just as one of the contributors to the article describes. 

We need to talk ourselves up and speak of our mission in positive and not negative or even doubtful terms – again as the article recommends.

And I endorse the suggested need to set an end date, and breaking the intended achievement down into bite-size chunks,  

But I would say, however, one odd but vital feature missed too often is this. It’s a question we should ask to test ourselves at the very start!

 “While on our own with our vivid visualisation of our resolution realised, do we feel more comfortable and happy in every respect with that picture; or in truth and on balance, do we actually still feel more comfortable with where we are at this moment?”

This is the significant point so often missed!

Unless our imagined image of our resolution achieved means enough to us – and certainly much more to us than where we are in life right now, then the vital engine of motivation is not fired within us to achieve it. Or if it is, then that engine, as mechanics say, ‘misses’ badly until it soon falters and dies.

My best advice is only make a resolution if you really mean it, want it, see it and feel it as though it was done, ­AND if you know life for you would be so much better with your success. That desire is what will drive you to achieve it. It should be a mission, no less.

Making a defective resolution bound to fail is bad for one’s self-worth and self-esteem anyway. It leaves the feeling of failure. Worse it convinces one there is no way to obtain change and improve when, done properly, there is. The process does work!
